DES PLAINES, IL October 29, 2003 - Podiatric Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Thomas S. Roukis, DPM, recently returned from Russia after completing a mini-fellowship in the use of external fixation for correction of severe foot and ankle deformities. The Russian Ilizarov Scientific Center for Restorative Truamatology and Orthopaedics (RISC-RTO) is located in the far reaches of Siberia and required 3 planes, 2 buses, and 20 hours of travel time to reach. Dr. Roukis has paid a high price of time and sacrifice to learn this unique and valued technique in order to help others here in the United States who have foot or ankle deformities.

For 10 days, Dr. Roukis was directly involved in the medical management and surgical treatment of a large number of patients suffering from long-standing severe foot and ankle deformities.

The majority of patients seen suffered from deep bone infections and ulcerations, fractures and dislocations, as well as, poor previous surgical results. This amazing technique, developed by Dr. Gavriil Ilizarov, involves correcting the bone deformity through small incisions under x-ray guidance and then placing thin wires into the skin and bones of the foot and ankle which are then attached to special rings through which the limb rests. This minimally-invasive technique can be used to correct a foot or ankle eformity immediately or slowly over time, depending on the exact location and nature of the eformity. Most patients are able to perform artial weight bearing immediately after the surgery.

Dr. Roukis recently completed the first documented case of toe stump lengthening with the use of small external fixation devices on a professional gardener who suffered amputations of his big, second, and third toes following a power lawnmower injury.

After covering the open wounds with a specialized muscle flap and skin graft, the toes were lengthened to their original shape and size. The patient was able to return to work only one week after the original injury and is currently able to walk without a limp and requires no specialized shoes or insoles. The scientific paper documenting this surgery has been accepted for publication within Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

In his private practice, Dr. Roukis successfully uses the technique to correct a wide range of severe foot and ankle deformities such as:

    - Neglected clubfeet
    - Diabetic Charcot collapse
    - Ankle arthritis
    - Post-traumatic deformities
    - Post-stroke contracture
    - Lengthen amputated foot and toe stumps

Dr. Roukis practices in Illinois at the Weil Foot and Ankle Institute(http://www.footankledeformity.com or http://www.weil4feet.com), has office locations in Des Plaines, Rolling Meadows, and Libertyville, and is on-staff at Holy Family Hospital, St. Alexius Medical Center, Highland Park Hospital, and Lake Forest Hospital.
